This is the whole mice and cockroaches plague idea. You offset that by not having waste that attracts them. Mice won't come from gardening, they'll come looking for things that humans leave behind. They feed off of our waste. Same with all pest type creatures. Clean up after yourself and they won't be much of an issue.
